General Park News - (7/24/21) Walt Disney World has confirmed that more of their live entertainment offerings will soon be returning. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios this will result in the return of the “Wonderful World of Animation’ projection show on the park’s Chinese Theater building starting on August 1, followed by the return of the live Beauty and the Beast - Live on Stage show in the Theater of the Stars on Sunset Blvd starting August 15.
Unfortunately, there is still no word on when “Fantastic!” will be ready to return. If I had to guess, they may wait until we get closer to the start of the 50th Anniversary on October 1st.
(6/17/21) A few cool detailed lights-on photos of Disney’s Rock ‘n Roller Coaster were posted to Twitter the other day by a rider following a e-stop that brought the train to a stop after the launch, but just before the train entered the first inversion.
(10/31/20) Disney World is set to make some changes to the ride reservation system they are using to experience Star Wars: Ride of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. We’ve talked before about how riders have to use the My Disney Experience mobile app after they are inside the theme park to join a “Boarding Group” to attempt to get on the ride, with windows opening up two or three times a day, depending on when you tried to visit.
The new Boarding Group procedure will begin starting November 3, 2020 and will no longer require guests to be inside the theme park itself. Instead guests with a valid park ticket or annual pass AND with a valid reservation to visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios on that day will be allowed to access the virtual queue system starting at 7am on that day to attempt to be assigned to a boarding group to ride.
It isn’t entirely clear, but I believe there still may be some kind of geographic location requirement, as they say you can do it from the Disney hotels and anywhere “nearby” Walt Disney World but I’m not sure how far it will work for passholders at home or those staying at resorts off-site. They also say that a second window of boarding group reservations will be made available at 2pm each day for those who missed out on the 7am window, however to gain access to this 2pm window you will once again have to be INSIDE the theme park as before.
The new tweak is designed to make things easier for guests to get a boarding group assigned to ride the attraction, and I would imagine it would also be a needed course of action to prevent overcrowding at the theme park so early in the morning by removing the geo-location requirement for the 7am reservation window.
2023 - New Fantastmic! - Rumor - (10/11/19) Consider this to be a long-out rumor, but the early word is that it may be time to revamp the Walt Disney World version of Fantasmic! In the not so distant future. I’m hearing the overall plan is to possibly hype it up as a 25th Anniversary upgrade for the show in much the same way that Disneyland upgraded their version for their shows’ own 25th anniversary in 2017, after opened in 1992.
If we use Disneyland as an example, this would mean that the Florida version of Fantastmic! would end up closing down for about a year to perform the upgrade, so in order to reopen in time for 2023, the existing show would likely close down sometime in 2022, just in time for whatever long-term 50th Anniversary plans for the WDW resort will be coming to a close.
???? - Pixar Place Expansion - Rumor - (2/12/20) We’ve heard a small tidbit about the possible future of the Star Wars: Launch Bay along with that entire surrounding area of the park, including One Man’s Dream, the Voyage of the Little Mermaid show and possibly even the soundstage where the Disney Junior shows are performed. According to the rumor, the concept of “Pixar Place” would be extended down to the Launch Bay area, with all the available space to be transformed into possible new attractions themed to various Pixar movie characters. Something themed around the Monsters Inc. universe seems very likely, as the Monsters Laugh Floor at the Magic Kingdom is always rumored to be on the chopping block. There is always buzz about trying to make a mini version of Cars Land as well, but I’m not sure they are ready to invest in a full blown Radiator Springs Racers attraction just as they are turning their focus onto the Epcot update. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing something with The Incredibles or Wall-E added here as well.
Of course, there is also the matter of what they intend to do with Indiana Jones at the park. Keep it, renovate it into a new show, turn the area into a full attraction… or are they ready to let Indy leave the Studios and head to Disney’s Animal Kingdom?
???? - Revised Rock ‘n Roller Coaster - (4/24/19) Our friends at Attractions Magazine were lucky enough to take a little tour of Walt Disney Imagineering not long ago, and while they had to keep the cameras put away for much of the time, they did learn a few fun facts about new Disney projects in the works. One of which was a confirmation that they were working on some new theme ideas for Rock ‘n Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, as the company’s license contract with Aerosmith is expiring in the near future.
We already know that the counterpart at the Walt Disney Studios Paris park is being given some kind of new Marvel theme, rumored to be tied to Iron Man or the Avengers, but that also won’t happen in Florida. Nothing was said about when the Aerosmith deal would end, but I believe these kinds of deals are often in 10 or 20 year increments, and since the ride opened in 1999, this year would be the 20 year mark. Of course Disney also always opt to pay for a small term extension if all parties agree so don’t count Aerosmith out just yet.
???? - Indiana Jones Land - Rumor - (3/19/19) I’m not sure how serious this rumor is, but according to the latest whispers on the wind, the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular may actually not be removed from Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Instead the show could close for a very lengthy makeover sometime between 2020 and 2021, and reopen with an enhanced show experience in time for Indiana Jones 5 to be released.
(10/24/18) Could an Indiana Jones themed land be the next major project for Disney’s Hollywood Studios once Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is complete? According to Disney & More and other rumor sites out there, Disney has been playing around with ideas of how to expand and update the Indiana Jones presence at the Orlando parks. We previously heard a rumored pitch that would have seen Indy moved to Animal Kingdom and the Dinosaur ride modified to become a full blown Indiana Jones Adventure ride like the one at Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySea, but it seems that the Studios park may need more immediate help than Animal Kingdom. Make the jump to read about where it may go and what existing attractions could be removed to make way.
